On June 20, 2023, the Adjudication Tribunal found Brenda Elliott, Registration No. 17641 (the Respondent”, guilty of conduct deserving of sanction under the Registered Nurses Act, 2008, subsection 18(c)(ii) professional incompetence and 18(c)(v) breach of the Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses in relation to allegations filed by then Western Regional Health Authority on January 13, 2021, and November 28, 2022.

The allegations alleged that the Registrant failed to meet the expected standards of practice of a registered nurse in failing to document the care provided to a critically ill patient such that it was difficult to retrospectively determine what actions were taken. The Allegation alleged that the Respondent repeatedly demonstrated a lack of knowledge and understanding for the required standards of practice for a Registered Nurse while working at the Western Memorial Hospital. In a decision dated October 27, 2023 the Adjudication Tribunal accepted an Agreed Statement of Facts and ordered that the Respondent’s license to practice nursing shall be suspended pending provision of a letter from the Registrant’s psychiatrist confirming fitness to practice; provision of a medical report from the Registrant’s physician confirming fitness to practice; completion of an assessment of nursing practice at the Centre for Nursing Studies and successful completion of all remediation recommendations.

Following the Registrant’s return to practice the Registrant’s practice shall be subject to monitoring by the employer for a period of 12 months and quarterly Practice Monitoring Reports shall be provided to the College.

The Registrant shall bear all costs associated with the requirements of the Adjudication Tribunal’s Order and shall be responsible for costs of the hearing payable within 12 months of the Registrant’s return to practice.
