Become a Nurse
Nursing Designations
Becoming a nurse in Newfoundland and Labrador involves a structured process influenced by your education, experience, and chosen nursing designation. The NL College of Nurses oversees 4 designations:
- Registered nurses (RNs)
- Nurse practitioners (NPs)
- Licensed practical nurses (LPNs)
- Registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs)
Each has its own education and registration requirements to ensure nurses are prepared to provide safe and competent care.
Nursing Education
To begin, you must complete an approved nursing education program.
Registered nurses and nurse practitioners complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Memorial University of Newfoundland, offered at multiple locations in partnership with the Centre for Nursing Studies.
Licensed practical nurses complete a practical nursing diploma through the College of the North Atlantic, the Centre for Nursing Studies, or private providers such as Keyin College.
These programs are intended for individuals who do not already have a nursing education and are interested in pursuing nursing as a career.
From Student to Nurse
If you are interested in becoming a nurse in Newfoundland and Labrador—whether you are a student, a new graduate, or already practising in another jurisdiction—the next step is to review the registration requirements for your intended designation.
Graduating from an approved program does not automatically allow you to practise. All applicants must apply to the NL College of Nurses and demonstrate that they meet requirements related to education, competence, and good character.
