How Complaints Are Investigated
Complaint Review
When a complaint is received, the NL College of Nurses follows a structured process to review and investigate the concerns raised.
- The first step is to assess the information to determine whether it falls within the College’s authority.
- If it does, the complaint is reviewed and additional information may be gathered from the complainant, the nurse involved, and other relevant sources.
- The nurse is informed of the complaint and given an opportunity to respond.
Investigation
When an investigation is required, it is conducted in a fair, impartial, and thorough manner. Once the investigation is complete, the College reviews all relevant information to determine whether there are concerns related to professional conduct, competence, or fitness to practice.
The matter is then considered through the appropriate regulatory process. Throughout the process, the College’s focus remains on protecting the public, ensuring accountability, and upholding fairness.
