Internationally Educated Nurse Practitioner

This section is for you if you want to become an NP and:

  • You were educated at the Nurse Practitioner (NP) level and completed your entry-level NP education program outside of Canada.

and

  • You do not hold NP licensure in another Canadian province/territory.

Critical information for International NP Applicants

  • You must hold a current registered nurse (RN) practicing licence or be eligible for RN licensure with the College to apply for licensure assessment as an internationally educated nurse practitioner (IENP).
  • Apply for an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). You will need to get an ECA of your NP education program. An ECA confirms that you graduated from an accredited NP education program and determines the general academic level (diploma or degree) of the credential in Canada.

Overview of the application process:

  1. Review the College’s Internationally Educated NP Licensure Process Explained document. This document details the application process and requirements.
  2. Complete the initial NP licensure form and submit it to the College. Please email the College at registration@nlcn.ca to request a copy of the application form.
  3. Submit your education credentials:
    • Provide an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) report for NP education program to the College.
    • Please see Licence Process Explainer document for accepted ECA sources.
  4. Complete program checklist:
    • Send this checklist to the school of nursing where you completed the NP program.
    • The school must complete the form and return it directly to the College.

After all required documents have been submitted, the College will assess your application and inform you of the decision and next steps.

Possible outcomes of the assessment

  • You are eligible for NP licensure.
  • You are eligible for temporary NP licensure while waiting to take the NP licensure exam.
  • You are required to complete some combination of theoretical courses and/or clinical practicum.
  • You are required to complete an NP re-entry program.
  • You are required to complete a full NP education program.

NP Licensure exam

All licensed NPs in NL are required to pass an approved NP licensure exam. This is the final step of the licensure process. You may be eligible for a temporary NP licence to practice while waiting to take the NP licensure exam.
