Re-entry for LPNs
Registrants who no longer meet the currency of practice hours requirement for renewal of an LPN practising license may regain their eligibility by completing one of the following:
- Approved LPN Re-Entry program – The current program offered in NL is available at the Centre for Nursing Studies. Find detailed information on the application process, program requirements and cost.
- Supervised Practice Experience Partnership Program (SPEPP)
Upon completion of the Re-Entry or SPEPP, the registrant will be eligible to re-apply for LPN licensure.
Supervised Practice Experience Partnership Program (SPEPP) – Temporary Licence with Conditions
SPEPP is a regulatory program that is employment-focused and available to individuals seeking re-licensure with the College. To be eligible for the program you must:
- Presently or previously been registered/licensed as an LPN with the College or another Canadian regulatory body;
- Have passed the licensure exam – LPN (CPNRE)
- Have a registration status in good standing;
- Have practice hours as an LPN within the last 10 years. Hours not on file with the College must be submitted and verified.
Note: If there are no practice hours in the last 10 years the individual must complete the LPN Re-entry program.
For additional information on SPEPP see the College’s SPEPP Guide (PDF).
Eligible LPN re-entry applicants will apply for a temporary licence with conditions and must have an NL employer.
- The licence will be granted for a 6-month period and may be extended.
- The program includes 450 hours of practice in a mutually agreed on area of practice.
- A minimum of 135 hours must be under the direct supervision of an experienced LPN or RN preceptor
- The remaining hours (315) may be under direct or indirect supervision.
Contact registration@nlcn.ca for information on the temporary application process.
These SPEPP forms must be submitted by you and the supporting employer/organization:
- SPEPP Intake Form for Employers/Organizations (PDF)
- SPEPP Initial Assessment Form for Preceptors (PDF)
- SPEPP Final Assessment Form for Preceptors (PDF)
- SPEPP Completion Form for Employers/Organizations (PDF)
Note: If you held a practicing licence in the immediately preceding licensure year and have practice hours from that year, but are not eligible for renewal, you may be eligible for a condensed version of SPEPP. This allows you to get the number of hours you need to meet the legislative requirement.
