Standards and Practice
Standards and Practices help you understand your professional expectations as a nurse. They bring together key standards, competencies, resources, consultations, and events that support safe, ethical, and accountable nursing practice across all roles in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Foundational Documents
Foundational nursing documents—including Standards of Practice, Codes of Ethics, and Codes of Professional Conduct—outline the expectations for safe, ethical, and accountable care in Newfoundland and Labrador. These professional standards guide decision‑making for LPNs, RNs, RPNs, and NPs. They support competent practice, and ensure the public receives consistent, high‑quality nursing care across all roles.
Practice Resources
The College regularly creates practice resources to help you understand what’s expected in specific areas of nursing. These documents break down requirements, clarify your responsibilities, and support you in meeting professional standards.
Scope of Practice
Your scope of practice defines what you’re educated, authorized, and competent to do. It’s shaped by legislation, standards, and your own judgment. Because each nursing designation has different responsibilities, you’re expected to work within your competence and the requirements set by the College to ensure safe, accountable care.
Entry-Level Competencies
Are you new to the nursing profession? Entry‑level competencies outline the knowledge, skills, and judgment you must show when you begin practice. They ensure you’re prepared to provide safe, competent, and ethical care.
Continuing Competency Program
The Continuing Competency Program (CCP) helps you stay current in your practice. It ensures you reflect on your learning needs and maintaining the skills required for safe, ethical care. CCP varies based on your nursing designation.
Practice Consultation
Practice consultations give you guidance on regulatory requirements, not clinical advice. They can help you understand how legislation, standards, scope, and expectations apply to your specific practice situations.
Events
Leadership panel discussions, professional development webinars, annual general meetings, and more. Stay current with College events.
