CPRNE for LPNs

The College is accountable to the public to ensure nurses have the knowledge, skill and judgement to practice safely. As part of the legislative requirements to become an LPN in Newfoundland & Labrador, you must successfully complete the licensure exam approved by the Board. This exam is the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE).

The CPNRE is administered by Meazure Learning. The exam tests the knowledge, skill and judgment practical nurses need at the beginning of their careers. The exam is a Linear on the Fly Test (LOFT) modality. This promotes enhanced security by giving every candidate a test that is equivalent in terms of content and difficulty, while ensuring a different test form for each writer.

CPNRE Testing Schedule

The CPNRE is available in the months of January, March, May, July, September and November. The exam is being offered through secure online proctoring for all exam candidates.

Overview of the exam application process:

This section applies to the following:

  • Newfoundland and Labrador PN graduates
  • Out-of-province PN graduates who have not established licensure as an LPN in another Canadian jurisdiction
  • Internationally educated nurses who have not established licensure as an LPN in another Canadian jurisdiction

Important exam related information:

  • You are permitted to write the CPNRE no more than a total of 4 times over a 3-year period.
  • The 3 year period begins on the earlier of, date of graduation, or the issuance of a temporary license; or for international applicants, from the time the College determines eligibility for licensure.
  • There must be a 45-day break between scheduled writings of the exam.
  • If you have a temporary licence, you must take the exam within the 4-month license period. You are strongly encouraged to take the exam at the next available testing window.
  • If you fail the CPNRE, you may request a rescoring of the examination upon payment of a fee.
