Liability Protection
Professional liability protection/insurance is required for licensure for all classifications of nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador.
For LPNs
LPNs are automatically provided professional liability coverage with annual licensure with Navacord (formally known as Lloyd Sadd). The professional liability policy with Navacord covers you for faults, errors, omissions, and negligence for nursing services rendered while acting within your scope and duties. For more information on the coverage provided under this policy and insurance program resources, see Canadian LPN Program Navacord.
NOTE: LPNs who are self-employed must hold commercial general liability insurance in addition to the errors and omissions liability insurance purchased as part of the College licence fee. Review the Self-employment Practice Guideline (PDF) for more information and consult with Navacord to get coverage.
For RNs, NPs, and RPNs
RNs, NPs, and RPNs are provided with professional liability protection (PLP) through the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CPNS). You must pay the PLP fee directly through the CNPS platform and confirmation of PLP coverage is required to be granted licensure.
Before proceeding with an application, renewal or reinstatement process in the member portal, you must successfully complete the CNPS PLP and Core Services renewal. The College must confirm coverage before the application process is complete.

NOTE: If you’re an RN, NP, or RPN who is self-employed, contact CNPS to determine the appropriate professional liability protection and business insurances required to support the nursing services being provided.
